you not missing anything. And it has nothing to do with my confidence in my selection. It has to do with a feeling, a certain number, especially that hanging .5 pt that seem to alway kill me if I dont buy it off. Anyways, I usually more times than any would only buy points on my big plays and not so much on the smaller ones. Hey like jaypaw said, why not spend the extra amount if it could get you a win or push, instead of a loss. Sometimes shit happens and when you think everything is on your side etc , the game ends up closer than you capped or completely the opposite of how you saw it. Anyways, if you playing big , might as well buy pts if it will benefit you. You menioned about buying pts in the NFL off or on lets say the 3pts. This is the same reason for doing it in the hoops. It has nothing really to do with your confidence, as you normally cap out a game a select to play the side that will cover comfortable over the number. So why buy points on or off 3, because you do it just in case. That is all it really is for , just in case. Plus, like i mentioned if you playing big, and you see it worthwhile for you to invest alittle more to buy pts . Then it could end up either being a total loss of extra vig or it could give you a win or push , or it wont matter at all. In that event you get back the extra you paid out. I expect to win and get back the extra vig I put out to win. But seems smarter to cover yourself sometimes with buying pts. Just in case. EX for BB I would go with -3 or -4 , I dont like it when its -2.5, -3.5. I buy it to -2 or -3. But hey , that is just me. I also would buy if pts are like -10.5. You know if you have the fav, that most teams will shoot for a 10 pt lead, etc. All kinds of scenerios , you just have to remember when you lost by the .5 pt or the 1 pt. then you can apply this approach to your own personal feeling.
